THE STUDENTS: Four Rutgers students from the university’s chapter of Engineers Without Borders traveled to Thailand over the summer in an effort to bring clean water to a remote farming village.
Ronn Friedlander, a 2008 Rutgers biomedical engineering graduate and recipient of the prestigious Gates Cambridge Scholarship, served as project leader. Joining Friedlander were sophomore Jessica Kretch, an industrial and systems engineering major; sophomore David Pal, a biomedical engineering major; and junior Laith Qumei, also a biomedical engineering major.
THE TRIP: Along with gathering health data from residents and testing water samples from wells, the students got to experience Thailand. They went whitewater rafting through the jungle, explored Buddhist shrines and monasteries, and traveled to Thai cities such as Bangkok and Chiang Mai.
