The Camden recovery bill signed by Gov. James McGreevey this summer includes an $11 million appropriation to the Camden campus as part of the vision to make Camden a premier University City.
"We are pleased and gratified by the governor's recognition that investment in Rutgers is an investment in the future of our state. This grant, which will be matched by Rutgers, will support our ongoing purchase and rehabilitation of nearby properties for the betterment of the campus and the community," said Camden Provost Roger J. Dennis.
The grant will allow the campus to expand its law school to include a mock courtroom, state-of-the-art teaching facilities and space to increase its pro bono legal programs. The campus also will seek to enhance its service to New Jersey's business community through its technology incubator, and to increase on-campus housing for graduate students.
"Rutgers would like to thank Governor McGreevey for his commitment to the city of Camden. We also would like to thank our own Rutgers–Camden graduates, state Senator Wayne Bryant and Assemblyman Joseph Roberts, for their leadership advocacy on behalf of the city, and the entire South Jersey legislative delegation for their steadfast support," said Dennis, who also noted the participation of another campus graduate, Assemblyman George Geist.
"It is both our duty and our privilege to serve as an engine for growth in the city and the region," Dennis continued. "Rutgers has a tradition of service in the city of Camden that will continue to grow."
