A shot in time
Soccer referee Bob DiMeo has had numerous bug bites while officiating at games on the Camden campus. But this time was different. Soon after being bitten on the throat, he started having trouble breathing and lost consciousness. Fortunately, Camden trainer Tom Maxwell knew just what to do. Assisted by Delano Lopez, a student trainer from Montclair State Universty, Maxwell administered a shot of epinephrine. It probably saved DiMeo's life. Maxwell notes that athletic trainers are rarely called on to deal with life-threatening situations. "This was a first," he says. "It was a nice feeling to have that I was able to be there to help him. I'm glad to see he's doing OK."
