Academic Challenge's Central Jersey winners

Archived article from Feb 9, 2001

By Ruby Keise

The following high schools emerged as winners of the Central Tournament in the Rutgers Academic Challenge: Marlboro, Immaculata in Somerville, High Technology in Lincroft, Edison, John P. Stevens in Edison, Matawan Regional in Aberdeen, Governor Livingston in Berkeley Heights, Monroe Township and Scotch Plains-Fanwood.

The nine teams advanced from a pool of more than 40 schools from Essex, Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, Somerset, Union and Warren counties that competed in the Central Tournament Sunday, Feb. 4, on the College Avenue campus.

The Challenge is a statewide interscholastic competition to promote academic excellence among high school students. Competitors vie for individual and team scholarships, and the President's Cup goes to the statewide champion.

Another nine teams will be selected from the Northern and Southern Conference tournaments, which will follow on Feb. 24 and March 3, respectively. The teams will square off in the regional semifinals Sunday, March 25, on the Busch campus.

The three regional champions will compete for the state championship during the last week of May. Broadcast segments on NJN Public Television in May and June will feature the students competing in both the regional and state championship rounds.

The Academic Challenge was developed by Rutgers in partnership with the New Jersey Department of Education and NJN Public Television, with sponsorship from PSE&G, the New Jersey Education Association and BD, a New Jersey-based medical technology company.
