Academic leaders welcomed back

More than 90 department chairs, deans and members of the president's cabinet were welcomed back to campus at a Sept. 13 breakfast meeting sponsored by the Academic Leadership Program.

"This annual event brings people together from all the greater New Brunswick and Piscataway campuses and across academic disciplines and administrative functions. It provides a great opportunity to exchange ideas and information as we plan for 2002–2003," said Barbara Bender, program chair and associate dean for academic support and graduate student services with the Graduate School–New Brunswick.

"The welcome back breakfast is an important component of efforts to support the work of chairs and other university academic leaders," added Brent Ruben, executive director of the Center for Organizational Development and Leadership, a sponsor of the program.

The group was welcomed by President Francis L. Lawrence and Joseph J. Seneca, university vice president for academic affairs.

"Working together as a team, with leaders on all three campuses, we have realized many of our dreams, and many others are well on their way to being fulfilled," Lawrence told the group.

Seneca encouraged the group to remain optimistic despite rising global tensions and economic uncertainty. "We need to continuously renew our commitment to academic excellence and to the mission of this institution," Seneca told the group. "We must focus on what we do and ensure that we continue to do it well."

Following the welcome, Michael Carroll, executive director of the Rutgers University Foundation and vice president for development and alumni relations, provided an update on the progress of the university's capital campaign. In addition, new state laws governing public access to government records were discussed.

The Academic Leadership Program will sponsor three seminars this semester. A colloquium on legal issues, featuring David Scott, university counsel, and Barbara Lee, dean of the School of Management and Labor Relations, will be held Tuesday, Oct. 8. John V. Byrne, executive director of the Kellogg Commission on the Future of State and Land Grant Colleges and Universities, will discuss "The University of the Future: National Issues Facing Higher Education" Tuesday, Nov. 19. Both events start at 8:30 a.m. at the Rutgers Club in New Brunswick. A third event on federal Immigration and Naturalization Service regulation is planned.

The Academic Leadership Program is also supported by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs and the Graduate School–New Brunswick.
