Adelaja named head of agricultural research

Archived article from Oct 1, 1999

By Margaret Sullivan

Adesoji Adelaja, professor and chair of the department of agricultural, food and resource economics at Cook College, has been named dean of research for the college and director of research for the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station (NJAES).

"I am very pleased that Soji, who is enthusiastically supported by the search committee, has consented to accept this appointment," said Cook Executive Dean Bruce Carlton. "His broad range of experience in policy research in the areas of food, environmental and agricultural policy at the urban fringe suits him especially well to lead Cook/NJAES in a contemporary approach to the challenging responsibilities of the position."

Adelaja joined the faculty of Cook College in 1986 as an assistant professor. In 1993 he became director of the Ecopolicy Center and in 1996 he was named chair of the department of agricultural, food and resource economics. That same year he received the university's Presidential Award for Distinguished Public Service.

Adelaja also served as senior policy adviser to the New Jersey secretary of agriculture from 1995 to 1996. In 1999 he was named director of Rutgers' Food Policy Institute.

Adelaja will assume his new position in mid-October. He will be replacing Peter Day, director of the Biotechnology Center for Agriculture and the Environment, who served as interim dean and director for the past 15 months.
