Michael Lattimore Sr. has been appointed director of public safety for the Newark campus. A Rutgers alumnus with an extensive background in urban policing, Lattimore retired earlier this year with the rank of captain after 27 years with the Plainfield police department. He served as that city’s director of public safety for nine years, until August 2004. Lattimore will be responsible for safety and security programs. His duties will include overseeing police services, building access systems and security, identification systems and life/safety programs.
Carlos A. Fernandez-Gonzalez has been appointed director of the Center for Latino Arts and Culture on the New Brunswick campus. Fernandez assumed his duties Sept 1. Fernandez holds a doctorate in folklore from Indiana University, where he specialized in ethnomusicology. Originally from Costa Rica, he is also an accomplished composer and musician. His scholarly research has focused on religious practice and traditional music of Central America and the Caribbean.
Gary Roth has been named vice provost for academic programs and services on the Newark campus. He had served as associate provost for graduate studies and enrollment management for the last three years. Roth will retain responsibility for enrollment management and coordination of academic advising, and will undertake new initiatives in undergraduate education, working closely with the deans of the undergraduate colleges and faculties. Roth teaches at Rutgers-Newark in the department of sociology.
