Donna K. Thornton, an alumni relations professional and a former mayor of Brewer, Maine, has been named associate vice president for alumni relations and executive vice president of the Rutgers University Alumni Federation.

Thornton, who will assume her responsibilities next month, is interim president and chief executive officer of the University of Maine Alumni Association, which represents 90,000 alumni. She has served in various leadership positions there since 1999. With a budget of $1.7 million and a staff of 20 employees, the alumni association increased donations by 69 percent under her leadership.

At Rutgers, Thornton will be the chief administrator for the alumni offices in New Brunswick/Piscataway, Newark and Camden, managing the budget, operations and staff. Her responsibilities also will include planning and implementing all alumni activities and services, and working collaboratively with the Rutgers University Foundation, alumni association governing boards and university units to attain broader institutional goals.
