Yans-McLaughlin named distinguished service professor
Virginia Yans-McLaughlin, a professor in the New Brunswick history department and an author and filmmaker, was named a distinguished service professor by the board of governors.
In a resolution, the board recognized Yans-McLaughlin for “her zeal in conveying the story of American immigration and immigrant life to a wide public.” Further, the board recognized her ability to provide sophisticated scholarly analysis in documents accessible to the public, her leadership in providing historical interpretations for numerous public history sites and her excellent scholarship.
“Professor Yans-McLaughlin has worked tirelessly to interpret and bring history to life for millions of people through her work at Ellis Island and other major historical sites, through her numerous publications, and in her award-winning film on Margaret Mead,” the resolution stated.
In other business, the board sold eight parcels of land adjacent to the Camden campus to the city of Camden for $1 to aid in the city’s urban redevelopment efforts. The city plans to build residential housing on the lots, valued at $275,000.
The board also granted an easement to the Middlesex Water Company to install a water pipeline on a vacant lot owned by Rutgers adjacent to the company’s water-treatment plant in Edison. The new pipeline will enable the water company to improve its level of service. Rutgers received $27,500 for the easement.
