Bloustein School reaps $18 million in external funding

Archived article from Oct 20, 2003

By Steve Manas

The Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy generated a record $18 million in external funds during the 2002–2003 academic year. The total represents a sixfold increase over the level of external funding recorded in 1992–1993, the school’s first year.

The funds will be used to support major national, state, regional and local urban planning and policy issues. The school’s largest externally funded projects include:

$4 million to the National Transit Institute for transit-industry training, education and safety programs;

$1.77 million to the Center for Government Services to administer two training programs;

More than $1.3 million to the John J. Heldrich Center for Workforce Development for four research projects; and

$675,000 for an HIV prevention program.

“Our outstanding ability to attract external funding from a range of sources, especially in a difficult economic environment, speaks to the quality of the faculty’s scholarship and breadth of real-world expertise,” said Dean James W. Hughes. “The school is a leader in such areas as smart growth, transportation planning, workforce development and environmental health, and much of the work in these areas is done in the school’s 11 centers and institutes.”

Bloustein School benefactors include: the U.S. departments of Energy, the Interior, Transportation, and Housing and Urban Development, as well as the Environmental Protection Agency and the National Science Foundation. State agencies funding studies and programs include: New Jersey Transit and the departments of Health and Senior Services, Community Affairs, Labor and Transportation.

Many private foundations — including the Fund for New Jersey, Johnson & Johnson, the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation — provided support to the school at the $100,000 level or above.
