The School of Business-Camden has created the Rutgers Family Business Resource Center of Southern New Jersey, an organization dedicated to helping families overcome typical internal tensions -- such as sibling rivalry and parent-child conflict -- that can undermine their enterprises.
"Decision-making is not always optimal or efficient in family-run businesses," said Alan Stedman, director of the new business initiative. "How do you evaluate the worth of a family member in the business arena? How do you reconcile intergenerational crosscurrents in order to produce a harmonious working relationship? These are real issues that many families are hesitant to tackle on their own."
The Rutgers Family Business Resource Center will offer entrepreneurs a forum for discussing such issues. Stedman notes that membership in the organization will provide networking opportunities, as well as a number of shared services -- including monthly breakfast meetings and seminars on specific issues -- that will enable owners to receive professional advice on a continuing, low-cost basis.
The Camden center complements the Rutgers Family Business Forum, established in 1996 by the Center for Applied Psychology of the Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology on the New Brunswick campus. The forum provides information, workshops, referrals and counseling services focused on the social, psychological and emotional issues involved in operating a successful family business.
The Camden center is sponsored by Summit National Bank, Arthur Andersen, Archer & Greiner and MassMutual/The Blue Chip Company. For more information, call ext. 6685.
