Export to Asia
Rutgers offers M.B.A. in Singapore and Beijing

Archived article from Oct 23, 1998

By Suzanne Barlyns

Rutgers' International Executive Master of Business Administration program has become a successful Far East export.

Following on the heels of the May graduation of the first 41 students of the Singapore International Executive M.B.A. class, the summer saw the beginning of a similar yearlong program in Beijing, China. A second Singapore class is scheduled to start in January.

The Beijing class is breaking new ground since Rutgers is presently the only American business school to offer an American degree in China, according to Professor Allan Roth, director of international programs at the Graduate School of Management on the Newark campus. There are 32 professionals in the Beijing program's first class.

"We've received a warm reception in both countries since there's a discernible attitude that American management education is better than any other," said Roth. "It's a great export for the United States."

Rutgers has offered an Executive M.B.A. program in New Jersey for 16 years and models its international curriculum after the intensive New Jersey program, but condenses the same 20 months of course work into a 12-month schedule.

The program overseas begins with an intensive week in residence, during which students live and study with New Jersey-based faculty who travel to Singapore throughout the school year. Courses are then conducted approximately once a month for 10-day periods during nights and weekends. The program concludes with a full-time two-week schedule.
