Felissa R. Lashley, dean and professor at Southern Illinois University's School of Nursing and clinical professor of pediatrics at the university's School of Medicine, has been named dean of the College of Nursing effective Nov. 17. Lashley's appointment follows the retirement of Dean Hurdis M. Griffith. Nancy Redeker, associate professor at the College of Nursing, has served as interim dean of the college since July 1.

"I am pleased that the search for a new dean for this important school has concluded with the appointment of a person who is held in such high regard by her peers," said President Francis L. Lawrence. "Dr. Lashley is an educator and leader of great stature and experience. Having her at the helm ensures that the College of Nursing will continue to strengthen its vital role in the state."

"Felissa Lashley is a leading nursing scholar who also has years of experience as a nursing dean and educator," said Steven J. Diner, acting provost of the Newark campus. "We are delighted that we have attracted someone of her stature to Rutgers at this crucial time for the nursing profession. I am confident that she will build on the College of Nursing's strong foundation to advance nursing education and research at the highest levels."

Lashley, a native of the Bronx, earned a doctorate from Illinois State University and a master's degree from New York University. She is certified as a Ph.D. medical geneticist by the American Board of Medical Genetics and was a founding fellow of the American College of Medical Genetics in 1992.

Lashley is also an AIDS Certified Registered Nurse. Prior to taking her position at Southern Illinois University, she was a professor and department head at the University of Illinois at Chicago's College of Nursing.

An expert on genetics, infectious disease and HIV/AIDS care, Lashley is widely published on these topics and has received numerous awards, including the Nurse Practitioner's Book of the Year Award for "Tuberculosis: A Source Book for Nurse Practitioners" (Springer) and the American Journal of Nursing's Book of the Year Award for "Clinical Genetics in Nursing Practice" (Springer). Her most recent book is "Emerging Infectious Diseases: Trends and Issues" (Springer). Lashley has also received the Golden Lamp Award for Excellence in Teaching at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Lashley has an extensive record of community service over many years. She serves on the Board of Trustees, City of Edwardsville, Ill., public library and has served as a library board member for the town of Normal, Ill.; as a board member of the Madison County Health Center; as an election judge in McLean County; and as a member and chair of the Human Rights Authority of the Guardianship and Advocacy Commission for the State of Illinois, Region 33.
