Five years running
U.S. News ranks Newark most diverse

Once again, U.S. News and World Report has ranked Rutgers-Newark first among both public and private national-doctoral universities for having the most diverse student population. Rutgers-Newark has been considered the most diverse institution since the inception of this category five years ago.

Rutgers-Camden continues to score high in its regional category, ranking again in the top five of public universities in the North.

The magazine's annual rankings of colleges and universities, released Sept. 6, once more places Rutgers among the top 25 national public universities. Rutgers ranked 24th on the list of the top 50 national-doctoral public universities, reaching the 17th-highest place (excluding tie scores) among national-doctoral public institutions and the 15th-highest place (excluding tie scores) among public universities that are members of the Association of American Universities (AAU).

According to Paul Snyder, vice president for institutional research and planning, Rutgers' actual graduation rate exceeded its "predicted" graduation rate by a significant amount: the actual rate was 34 percent higher than predicted in Newark and 19 percent higher than predicted in New Brunswick. This graduation performance measure is based on criteria employed by U.S. News and World Report. This is the only true outcome or performance measure used in the rankings, and it placed Rutgers third among all public AAU institutions, Snyder noted.

"Rutgers has long been dedicated to the principles of quality, affordability and accessibility in higher education," said Snyder. "Our many efforts in these areas have again been acknowledged by U.S. News and World Report, and all of us at Rutgers can be proud of this recognition." Snyder added that it is important to examine the methodology employed to rank institutions in order to best understand the results and place them in appropriate context.
