Question: I am turning 65 next month and plan to continue employment for several more years. Do I need to enroll in Medicare next month?
Answer: No, you are not required to enroll in Medicare if you have active employee health coverage or are covered under a spouse who has active employee coverage. When you retire, however, you must enroll in Medicare to participate in Retired Group State Health Benefits. Medicare information is available on the Medicare Web site, www.medicare.gov.
Question: When my divorce becomes final, can I still cover my divorced spouse on my health plan?
Answer: Once your divorce becomes final, your former spouse’s coverage will continue through the end of the month in which the divorce is finalized. After that, your ex-spouse may continue coverage for up to 36 months by enrolling in COBRA. Once your divorce is final, contact University Human Resources to request a COBRA application for your former spouse. You will also be required to complete and submit health and dental benefit applications to delete your ex-spouse. These applications and 2004 COBRA rates are available at uhr.rutgers.edu . Information about COBRA is also available on the Division of Pensions and Benefits Web site, www.state.nj.us/treasury/pensions.
