Impact of RUNet 2000 evident on the Web

Archived article from Oct 13, 2000

By Harvey Trabb

RUNet 2000 is well along the path to extending and expanding the university's communications capabilities, and now a new way to examine the project's impact has been added to the RUNet 2000 Web site.

Operating on a pilot basis at present, the Web site at runet2000.rutgers.edu/impact addresses RUNet 2000 applications in terms of their impact on the university's mission areas of learning, discovery and community engagement, and also looks at their administrative uses. It provides links to more than 70 Rutgers project Web sites, with more to come. The sites are grouped in terms of mission area going across the top of the page, while links down the left side cross-reference the same sites in terms of the academic growth areas of the Rutgers strategic plan.

For example, links leading from the "learning" category take users to Web pages on the Center for Electronic Texts in the Humanities, continuous education and outreach, the Rutgers digital library, and projects in such disciplines as English, computer science and biology. Going across the page in the Information Science and Technology growth area leads to pages in such projects as supercomputing, Internet2, high-performance computing, molecular dynamics simulations and multimodal collaborative systems.

"RUNet 2000 is helping students, faculty, staff and others take advantage of a wide variety of interactive Rutgers-created resources," said Christine Haska, vice president for institutional research and planning. "This new Web site provides information about many of our projects and programs while illustrating the useful connections coming from RUNet 2000."
