Thirty-nine students, the largest group of new members to date, were welcomed as Rutgers Community Service Officers in a ceremony Feb. 8. Since the program started in 2000, it has grown to become one of the largest trained student security forces in the nation. Five former CSOs are now full-time officers at Rutgers, while many more have moved on to careers in law enforcement, criminal justice or homeland security. The students serve as eyes and ears for Rutgers Police, patrolling neighborhoods, checking bags at public events, helping with traffic and transporting students back to their dorms. A similar program has been instituted in the Emergency Services Department, where 15 emergency services officers are providing fire safety services to the university. The 39 students received certificates acknowledging completion of 40 hours of training. CSOs work an average of 20 hours per week.
