Rutgers scientists are among the leaders in the field of artificial intelligence (AI), according to a study published this summer in Intelligence magazine, put out by the Association for Computing Machinery, the authoritative professional organization for computer scientists. The magazine based its ratings on an analysis of AI papers listed in the Science Citation Index for the years 1980-95.
In the general area of AI applications, which listed 38 names, the top-rated author was Sholom Weiss, research professor of computer science, who recently retired from Rutgers. Also on the list were Saul Amarel, the Alan Mathison Turing Professor of Computer Science, and Casimir Kulikowski, Board of Governors Professor of Computer Science.
Saul Amarel also had the distinction of appearing as one of the 12 names on the list of machine-learning authors. Number one on that list was Tom Mitchell, who spent several years at Rutgers before moving to Carnegie-Mellon University.
Computer science was not the only Rutgers department to have an impact on artificial intelligence, according to the study. Zenon Pylyshyn, professor of cognitive science, was number two on the list of seven people in philosophical foundations.
Artificial intelligence is part of the information science and technology growth area within Rutgers' strategic plan.
