MBA in pharmaceutical management
New MBA option to keep drug companies healthy

Archived article from Feb 11, 2000

By Dave Muha

Seven of the nation's leading pharmaceutical companies, known for investing heavily in the research and development of life-enhancing medicines, are making an investment of a different sort -- education. They have become partners with the Graduate School of Management to offer an innovative specialization in pharmaceutical management within the Master of Business Administration program.

Developed with full participation of top industry executives, the program is designed to meet a growing need for talented, motivated individuals with a special knowledge of the pharmaceutical business.

"The pharmaceuticals industry has entered a very exciting new era," said Patrick J. Zenner, president and chief executive officer of Hoffmann-La Roche Inc. and chair of the Health Care Institute of New Jersey. "Fueled by new scientific advances resulting in innovative new medicines, the industry continues to experience excellent growth. And with that growth comes a greater demand for talented leaders."

New Jersey is home to the largest concentration of pharmaceutical companies in the world. The program capitalizes on this geographic advantage by offering selected participants, to be designated "Industry Scholars," a hands-on learning experience.

Fourteen Scholars will be selected for the first class, which will begin the 60-credit, full-time program this fall. Up to 20 will be selected in succeeding years.

The sponsors, which include Bristol-Myers Squibb Company, Hoffmann-La Roche, Inc., Johnson & Johnson, Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corp., Organon Inc., Pharmacia & Upjohn, and Warner-Lambert Co., helped craft the curriculum, which includes 24 credits in pharmaceutical management, marketing and related strategic issues. They will stay involved through the school's Advisory Committee on Pharmaceutical Education to ensure the program continues to reflect contemporary issues in the industry.
