The Mason Gross School of the Arts will launch “project.,” an exhibition program with the aim of presenting a wide range of art in all media, from well-established artists and those who are just beginning their careers.
“That mix is part of the organizing principle of the “project.” program – that art-making happens along a continuum of development and ambition,” said Mason Gross Galleries Director Lawrence Waung. “We think that makes particular sense given the context of this space in a fine arts school located near one of the great global contemporary art centers.”
The program will be hosted within a new space in the Mason Gross Galleries. The inaugural exhibition,“project.1 Pamela Jorden,” featured the recent work of an up-and-coming Los Angeles-based painter and graduate of the California Institute of the Arts. In her abstract paintings, Jorden considers the use of looping lines and marks as creating relationships, such as words in sentences that build into paragraphs.
The second exhibition in the new space, “project. 2 Mike Bidlo,” will open Nov. 14. Bidlo, who maintains studios in New York and New Jersey, has shown his work internationally since the 1980s. For “project.2 Mike Bidlo,” the artist will create an installation of sculptures based on Andy Warhol’s iconic “Brillo Boxes.” Advanced printmaking and video production students from the department of visual arts at Mason Gross will collaborate with Bidlo on the exhibit.
According to Mason Gross Dean George Stauffer, “project.” has significant benefit for both the university and the community. “In addition to complementing our regularly scheduled shows of student and faculty work, this exciting new series will add another dimension to an increasingly vital downtown New Brunswick,” Stauffer said. “We like the idea of contributing to the cultural environment of our home city at the same time that we give our students increased exposure to contemporary art, virtually in their own classrooms.”
