Michael V. McKay, former senior associate director of the Center for Computer Aids for Industrial Productivity (CAIP), has been appointed university director of telecommun-ications within Rutgers University Computing Services (RUCS). Joseph Sanders, strategic-initiatives manager at Bell Atlantic, will also be joining RUCS' telecommunications division as director of telecommunications.
In his new position, McKay will be responsible for planning, management and leadership of the telecommunications division, which encompasses some of the university's most important infrastructure and services, including the implementation of RUNet 2000. Sanders will play a key role in the areas of oversight and project management of that effort.
"These two exceptionally strong appointments will provide vigorous new leadership for this important area of our work," said Christine M. Haska, vice president for institutional research and planning, in announcing the appointments. "This is particularly significant as RUNet 2000 moves from the planning stages to tactical implementation as a project that will have a major impact throughout Rutgers for years to come."
"I want to welcome Mike McKay and Joe Sanders to the RUCS team," said George G. Laskaris, executive director of computing and information technology. "We look forward to working with both of them on RUNet 2000 and all of the other priority telecom- munications projects here at Rutgers."
McKay spent a decade at CAIP, where his duties included providing the technological infrastructure for the center to implement a research program yielding more than $62 million in external funding. He has extensive experience with networks for research and educational purposes, from both engineering and applications perspectives.
"We have a truly exciting task ahead," McKay said. "I'm looking forward to this oppor-tunity to work with the people throughout Rutgers who have contributed so much to RUCS and to the development of the RUNet 2000 project to date."
McKay earned a bachelor's degree in engineering at the U.S. Military Academy and a master's degree in business management from Central Michigan University. He retired from the Army as a lieutenant colonel after a 22-year career. He began his service to Rutgers as head of the Army ROTC department and was a professor of military science before joining CAIP.
Like McKay, Sanders also earned a bachelor's degree in engineering at the U.S. Military Academy. In addition, he holds a master's degree in public administration from the University of Oklahoma. Sanders gained extensive experience at Bell Atlantic in the project management of outside plant telecommunications construction and installation projects.
