U.S. Rep. Robert Menendez (D-13) was awarded the Rutgers Medal, the university's highest nonacademic honor, during ceremonies in July in the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. Rutgers President Richard L. McCormick presented the medal to Menendez, a 1979 graduate of the Rutgers School of Law–Newark, in recognition of his long record of distinguished public service and commitment to higher education.
"Congressman Menendez has been a passionate, effective advocate for the people of New Jersey," McCormick said. "He has emerged as a national leader and is one of Capitol Hill's true friends of higher education. Through his many years of public service, he has brought honor and inspiration to the university community, and I am proud to award him the Rutgers Medal."
"I am extremely honored to receive this medal," said Menendez. "Rutgers is an outstanding university, and I believe that my Rutgers education has helped me serve the people of New Jersey and the nation. As an alumnus, I am particularly proud that Rutgers has become one of our country's most diverse universities, with a strong commitment to ensuring broad access to quality higher education."
