In a move that will help the university obtain lower interest rates on bonds when it seeks financing for capital projects, Moody's Investors Service has upgraded Rutgers' debt rating from A1 to Aa3.
In its explanation of the upgrade, Moody's cited a significant increase in research grants obtained by the university during the past five years and the promise the university shows in leveraging additional philanthropic support in the future. Moody's also pointed to Rutgers' affordable tuition and growing student demand for enrollment as reasons for the new rating.
"Ultimately, the Moody's upgrade will help Rutgers realize its strategic-planning vision to enhance its position as one of the top public research universities in North America," said Joanne G. Jackson, senior vice president and treasurer.
