Rutgers student-artists stand proudly in front of their art work unveiled Feb. 23 at HUB Teen Center in New Brunswick. The project – part of Transcultural New Jersey’s Public Service Arts Program, spearheaded by Rutgers – trains artists and Rutgers student interns how to facilitate social change through collaborative community art-making. The goals of the mural project are to teach teens how to communicate their feelings through painting and to work together to achieve a positive result. “Most of the teens we worked with had never created art before. Through this project, we allowed them to express their concerns and discover their own creativity,” says Yiles del C. Suriel, trained by the Transcultural New Jersey Public Service Arts Program.
