The 1999–2000 state champions of the Rutgers Academic Challenge were honored with a Senate floor resolution at the Statehouse in Trenton Monday, Oct. 23.
Team members and advisers from first-place Monsignor Donovan High School, runner-up Columbia High School and third-place John P. Stevens High School were recognized by their respective legislators: Monsignor Donovan, Toms River, by Sen. Andrew R. Ciesla (R-10); Columbia, Maplewood/South Orange, by Sen. Ronald L. Rice (D-28); and John P. Stevens, Edison, by Sen. Jack G. Sinagra (R-18).
The Academic Challenge, now entering its third year, comprises a series of innovative, statewide educational tournaments designed to promote academic excellence and team building among high school youth, while showcasing the positive accomplishments of New Jersey’s future workers and decision makers.
Competition components include group problem solving, creative thinking, public presentations and rapid-response questioning in the social sciences, humanities, sciences and mathematics.
Rutgers Academic Challenge is truly a collaborative effort, said Linda Bassett, associate director of university programming in the Office of Print and Electronic Communications. “Academic Challenge enables the university to work with K–12 educators, corporate leaders, legislators and Rutgers personnel in conjunction with NJN television to promote academic excellence in New Jersey.”
