Rutgers' researchers and students will benefit from increases in the newly enacted 2001 federal budget. The National Institutes of Health (NIH), a key source of federal dollars for Rutgers, is getting a 14 percent budget hike.
"The boost in the NIH budget is very important to us," said President Francis L. Lawrence. "All of the federal agencies that fund university research now have double-digit increases, and this means that the Rutgers faculty will be able to compete for a larger pool of available grant monies."
Through the Department of Education, there will also be an increase in the maximum Pell grant by some $450 per year. The new Pell grant limit, together with increases in other federal student aid programs, could translate into an additional $4 million for Rutgers students this coming year.
