New guidelines for university Web pages
Archived article from Mar 1, 2002
Web use at the university has seen a meteoric rise since Rutgers developed one of the first university-based Web sites in the nation in 1994. Today, the number of discrete pages within the rutgers.edu domain exceeds 500,000; daily visitors to the home page exceed 30,000.
To ensure that these pages have accurate, high-quality information readily accessible by the public, the president's cabinet recently approved a new policy document outlining requirements for university Web sites, said Paul Snyder, vice president for institutional research and planning. Web pages, for instance, should include university identification, clear contact information and e-mail links; contain reliable information and functioning links to the main Rutgers page and other Web sites; and be free of spelling errors. The guidelines also include specific recommendations and resources for improving Web sites at Rutgers.
The policy was drafted by a task group composed of representatives from computing services, university relations and campus information services in consultation with Web developers, administrators and information-technology staff on all three campuses.
Faculty and staff can read the new university policy at toolkit.rutgers.edu/webpolicies.html. For more information, send e-mail to Tony Heriza at heriza@rci.rutgers.edu.
