New master's program launched
Public health program begins in Newark

The new Master's in Public Health at Science Park, a joint program of the Graduate School-Newark, the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) and the New Jersey Institute of Technology, got off to a good start last semester, according to Evan Stark, M.P.H. program director for the Rutgers-Newark campus.

Stark, who also directs the track in health policy and administration, reported that some 44 students were enrolled in the first semester and a total of 68 are enrolled for the spring.

The program is part of UMDNJ's statewide School of Public Health, which builds on the strengths of the three universities and Science Park's Public Health Research Institute to respond to a growing need for highly trained public-health professionals, said Stark, an associate professor of public administration.

Among issues the program addresses are health care for high-risk, urban and underserved populations. Although the Rutgers contribution is based in the graduate department of public administration, the departments of political science and economics and the School of Nursing are also involved.

The Newark program will complement the New Brunswick/Piscataway graduate program in public health, which offers master's and doctoral degrees under joint sponsorship by UMDNJ's School of Public Health, the Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy and the Graduate School-New Brunswick.
