Nobel laureate to speak in Newark Oct. 22

The most acclaimed contemporary Portuguese novelist in the world will make a rare appearance in the United States Oct. 22, visiting the city that boasts one of the largest Portuguese populations outside of Portugal.
José Saramago, winner of the 1998 Nobel Prize in Literature, will give a talk on the Newark campus as part of the campus's celebration of its new minor program in Portuguese studies. The first Portuguese author to win the prize in literature, the prolific Saramago has written 10 novels, four plays, three volumes of poetry, a volume of short stories, five volumes of diaries and several collections of essays.
The talk will take place at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 22, in the Robeson Campus Center. There is no admission fee. For additional information, call ext. 5594.
