Partnership with Cisco Systems
Cisco and Rutgers create a new technology alliance

Archived article from Feb 4, 2000

By Harvey Trabb

Cisco Systems Inc. and Rutgers have entered into a new alliance that will provide networking hardware, technology incubation opportunities and support for Internet technology education programs at the university.

The new partnership will leverage Rutgers' prominence in the area of technology innovation in higher education with Cisco's leadership in Internet and university-based networking hardware solutions.

Under the agreement, Rutgers designates Cisco as the vendor of choice to provide cutting-edge data communications equipment at a competitive price for network enhancements being made through the RUNet 2000 project. RUNet 2000 is a four-year, $100 million effort aimed at creating an advanced data, video and voice communications infrastructure for the university. The infrastructure will strengthen Rutgers' ability to address work force development through outreach and re-education programs and expand the reach of the Rutgers network to include K-12 schools and other New Jersey educational institutions.

The agreement also provides for the establishment of a technology incubation program for faculty and students who have innovative ideas with commercial potential. In addition, Cisco has agreed to serve in an advisory role on Internet technology research and education program development and will fund co-sponsored research.

"These agreements provide Rutgers with important new strengths in our infrastructure and in our potential to deliver greater returns to the state and national economies through the development of intellectual property," said President Francis L. Lawrence. "I am delighted to welcome Cisco Systems as a partner in our efforts to achieve new levels of excellence for the state of New Jersey and its people."
