Pitch in and help waste the competition
Archived article from Jan 23, 2006
Let’s get ready to recycle! That’s the rallying cry this year as Rutgers enters RecycleMania, a friendly competition among university recycling programs across the country.
Over a 10-week period from Jan. 29 to April 8, 87 schools will compete in different contests to see which institution can collect the largest amount of recyclable material, the least amount of trash, and garner the highest recycling rate. The goal of the event, which began in February 2001, is to increase student awareness of recycling and waste reduction on campus. Rutgers is competing in RecycleMania for the first time this year against schools including Princeton University, Boston College and the University of Michigan. RecycleMania is part of the federal Environmental Protection Agency’s WasteWise program.
Students, faculty and staff should do their best to recycle all cardboard and mixed recyclable paper and commingled bottles and cans. The winning university will have the highest cumulative total after the 10 weeks.
