Archived article from Nov 21, 2005

By Steve Manas

Stuart Meck, a former national president and senior research fellow at the American Planning Association (APA), is the new director of the Center for Government Services, a unit of the Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy in New Brunswick.

Under Meck, the APA’s “Growing Smart” project resulted in the development of a new generation of model planning and zoning enabling legislation that has been used in 15 states. At the APA in Chicago for 11 years, Meck was responsible for major reports on regional approaches to affordable housing, model smart growth codes and planning for wildfires. He also conducted planning statute reform studies for Montana, Michigan and the Czech Republic.

For 12 years, Meck was an assistant city manager and planning director in Oxford, Ohio, the home of Miami University, where he taught public administration and organizational theory. Meck earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in journalism and a master’s in city planning at Ohio State University. He also holds an M.B.A. from Wright State University.
