Remembering September 11

Rutgers will mark the second anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks with free, public events in Newark and New Brunswick/Piscataway.
New Brunswick The Islamic Society of Rutgers University, in cooperation with Campus Ministries, will hold an interfaith prayer service for world peace on the Old Queen's lawn at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11. A wreath will be placed at the base of the tree planted in front of Winants Hall in memory of the Rutgers alumni who died in the terrorist attacks.
Two blood drives in honor of Rutgers alumni who died Sept. 11 will be held on campus. The first will take place from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 10, in a New Jersey Blood Services bus in front of Scott Hall. The second will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, in the Rutgers Student Center.
At 4:30 p.m. Sept. 11, the School of Communication, Information and Library Studies will dedicate an addition to "The Triumphs and Tragedies of Humankind," a collection of front-page newspaper headlines, photographs and articles from important dates in U.S. history. A panel has been added that displays front-page coverage of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and subsequent events. The ceremony will take place in the student lounge of the SCILS building on the College Avenue campus.
Newark Provost Steven J. Diner, student leaders, and religious leaders will speak at noon Thursday, Sept. 11, at "September 11, 2001: An Observance" in the Multipurpose Room of the Paul Robeson Campus Center. In addition, from 1 to 6 p.m., a video about last year's observance, "A Unified Campus Gathering: Remembering September 11," will be shown.
Camden Camden students will participate in a citywide interfaith service at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, located at Broadway and Market Street in Camden. The event will take place from 8 to 9 a.m. Following the event, and throughout the morning, student leaders will hand out cloisonné pins of the American and Rutgers flags to those who stop at the campus' Sept. 11 memorial to pay their respects.
Also ahead: The Rutgers University Homeland Security Research Initiative will hold a symposium from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23, at the DIMACS Center, CoRE Building, Busch campus. The symposium will highlight homeland security research at Rutgers. The symposium is free and open to the public but registration is required.
