Team members from defending champion John P. Stevens High School waited anxiously to hear their school's name as Dean Paranicas, a member of the Rutgers Board of Governors, named the nine winners in the Academic Challenge Central Regional Conference Tournament, held on the Douglass campus Feb 5.
Academic Challenge is a Rutgers competition for high school students. It includes group problem-solving exercises as well as a more traditional rapid-response question-and-answer session.
The winners are: Rutgers Preparatory, Hunterdon Central, East Brunswick, John P. Stevens of Edison, Hopewell Valley Central, Bernards, Montgomery, Edison and Mother Seton of Clark. These teams will advance to the semifinals to be held Saturday, March 25.
When they heard they had placed fourth, the Stevens team members breathed a sigh of relief.
"We felt pressured to maintain the level of performance we had last year, and even the new team members felt they needed to live up to last year's performance," said Tao Yue, a Stevens senior.
The Challenge will continue with the Southern Regional Conference Tournament Feb. 26 on the Camden campus; teams in the northern region will compete on the Newark campus Saturday, March 11. More than 100 teams are participating in the three regional tournaments. The students are vying for individual and team scholarships, as well as for the President's Cup, which will be presented to the first-place team in the state championship.
