faculty award honorees
President Richard L. McCormick took part in a luncheon to honor faculty members for 40 years of service to the university. Seated with the president are back row, left to right, Seymour Becker; FAS–History, NB; George A. Articolo, FAS–Mathematics,C; Manoranjan Dutta, FAS–Economics, NB; and front row, Adeline I. Tallau, Library of Science & Medicine, NB; President Richard L. McCormick; and Kook Dong Pae, Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering, NB.

The university held its eighth faculty service luncheon May 7 in the Neilson Dining Hall on the Cook/Douglass campus, recognizing faculty members for their contributions to the university. A total of 151 faculty members were honored for 10, 20, 30 and 40 years service.

In opening remarks, Joseph J. Seneca, university vice present for academic affairs, noted that, taken together, the faculty had given more than 2,900 years of service to the university.

"Your contributions to society, through your research and service and, most particularly, in your classrooms, laboratories, libraries and in the field, have made an impact that will continue to be felt long after all of us have left Rutgers," Seneca said. "You are the very lifeblood of this institution.

President Richard L. McCormick congratulated the honorees for their years of service and dedication to the university and the state, and for their contributions to excellence at Rutgers. "On your watch, collectively, this university has reached toward the very first ranks of American public research universities," McCormick said. "Look around this room. Imagine if these men and women had not had their careers at Rutgers B how far we would be from the goals we have set."

Roger S. Clark, professor of law, School of Law-Camden, who was celebrating 30 years of service to Rutgers, spoke on behalf of the faculty, providing colorful reminiscences and words of reflection. During his tenure, Clark said, he has lived through the reign of seven U.S. presidents, three university presidents and 16 deans of the law school; taught criminal law 25 times; and spent 3,400 contact hours with students. "My life's work has been as a teacher," Clark said, "And of that I am very proud."

Rutgers senior Matthew Kleiman, former president of the Rutgers College Governing Association and the student representative to the New Jersey Commission of Higher Education, thanked the faculty on behalf of the students for the teaching that Ahelps make Rutgers a smaller school. He also thanked the faculty for their service to the community in rallying behind the president in the fight to have the proposed budget cuts restored. "Your work has been an inspiration to us all."
