The university held its seventh faculty service recognition luncheon May 7 in the Neilson Dining Hall on the Cook/Douglass campus, honoring 206 faculty members for their contributions to the university. A total of 69 faculty marked a decade of service, 56 marked 20 years, 77 marked 30 years, three marked 40 years and one celebrated his 50th anniversary.
In opening remarks, Joseph J. Seneca, university vice president for academic affairs, noted that collectively the faculty in the room had given nearly 4,300 years of service to the university. "Each component of that incredible number is a career dedicated to this institution, and the collective total suggests the immortality of the transmission of learning," said Seneca.
President Francis L. Lawrence thanked faculty members for their "valuable contributions to this community of scholarship. You have strengthened our traditions of excellence in teaching and learning, increased our reputation for research and discovery, and your work has contributed to the economic development of our state and Rutgers' productive engagement with all of the communities we serve."
Lawrence specifically praised sociology Professor Jackson Toby, who is celebrating 50 years at Rutgers. Toby's work, he said, was "brilliant and diligent. He helped to establish the traditions of faculty excellence that mean so much to all of us."
The president also cited two married couples on the faculty, each spouse marking 30 years at Rutgers: Steven F. Walker and Janet A. Walker, professors of Asian languages and cultures; and Robert H. Bolton and Martha B. Bolton, professors of philosophy.
The attendees heard a student view of the impact of teaching on young lives from Jason Redd, a master of public health degree candidate and the University Senate's graduate student representative to the board of trustees.
Redd singled out Michael Greenberg, professor of urban studies at the Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy, as an influence on his undergraduate experience.
"I took his class because it was required, but what I gained from this class was entrance into a new world of academia and the knowledge that past academic performance is not indicative of the future," Redd recalled. "Through countless discussions and my interaction with him as a research assistant, I found something that I do well and will allow me to make a difference in the world."
Redd told the faculty: "You all have the ability to shape students and give them insights into your world. Your research and your course work are not things you do because it is a job. You do it because it is your life's passion and your way to make the world better."
Ruth Mandel, Board of Governors Professor of Politics and director of the Eagleton Institute of Politics, echoed these sentiments and told the honorees: "Like me, many of you probably harbor the private thought that behind the face in the mirror, there still lurks the heart of a graduate student.
"We've made careers at Rutgers, a university so stimulating and exciting, vital, invigorating, nourishing to our intellect and au courant, that we remain perennially young," Mandel declared. "And we have been fortunate to root ourselves in an institution that offers multiple opportunities for experimentation, innovation, new ventures and so many outlets for entrepreneurial energies, scholarship and intellectual creativity."
This year's honorees are listed below.
