Rutgers mourns Richard W. Renfree, scientist, professor, inventor

Rutgers engineer Richard W. Renfree of Scotch Plains died at Robert Wood Johnson Hospital in New Brunswick on Tuesday, April 20, of lung cancer. He was 50. Renfree was an assistant research professor in the department of ceramics and materials engineering at Rutgers, and a project leader in the Advanced Materials via Immiscible Polymer Processing (AMIPP) Center. He was an integral member of the core research projects at the center and had also taught multiple courses in the packaging science and engineering program. Renfree received a Bachelor of Arts degree in physics (with honors) and a Master of Science and doctorate in mechanics and materials science, all from Rutgers. He was the author or co-author of more than 50 technical publications and a book. He received numerous and varied state and federal awards. Renfree was acclaimed for his construction of a bridge made of recycled plastic, built last year in Wharton State Forest. He is survived by his wife, Maryann, three children, William, Mark and Samantha, and a sister, Marty, all of Scotch Plains.
