Rutgers to aid victims' families

Archived article from Sep 28, 2001

By Douglas Frank

Rutgers will provide full-tuition undergraduate scholarships to the dependent children of all New Jersey residents who lost their lives in the Sept. 11 attack on the United States, President Francis L. Lawrence announced prior to his State of the University address at the University Senate meeting Sept. 21.

"By doing so, we are recognizing the deep damage done to our state and the thousands of individuals affected forever by this terrible act," Lawrence said. "We also affirm that it is education and good works that ultimately will provide the only effective antidote to the poison of hatred and violence."

The president also established an endowed scholarship fund, as part of the Rutgers Campaign, to allow donors to support the Rutgers education of these bereaved children.

"I invite everyone in the Rutgers community, including our alumni, to join in support of this new program," Lawrence said. "I thank every Rutgers person and group who has already responded to the attack on America, and I urge all of you to continue your efforts in this time of trial."

Lawrence said he was "extremely proud" of the Rutgers community's "courage, compassion, sensitivity and caring" in the face of these attacks, and cited such examples as donating blood, providing pillows, blankets and other donations to the Salvation Army, tendering grief counseling, and offering workforce and computer network support to affected businesses and schools.

"There is an ongoing need for blood, as well as monetary donations to the Red Cross and the other relief organizations helping the victims and their families," Lawrence concluded. "By supporting these humanitarian efforts we, as citizens of the world community of learning, can strengthen the bonds that unite us in the worldwide fight against terrorism."
