No one really wants to know how much money he or she owes, but when the time comes to settle the books, Rutgers is making it as painless as possible. Students can now access their personal financial statement of accounts through a secure Web site. The site details all student charges and payments, including tuition, housing, financial aid and parking fines.
The Student Accounts Receivable (SAR) site is reached through the "Current Students" link on the Rutgers home page, www.rutgers.edu. Students must enter their nine-digit identification number and a password to access their financial information.
The site debuted Nov. 8 and received 150 hits that first day without any formal announcements or publicity, said Don Gordon, assistant director in Administrative Computing Services (ACS).
The site is the latest in a series designed to improve student access to information and to reduce the need to wait in lines or take care of business during regular business hours. (See story on Web registration above.)
Other existing online services for students include:
--Registrar/scheduling -- Student can check grades, transcripts, class schedules and the university's schedule of classes.
--Financial aid -- Students can learn the status of required documents.
--Graduate and undergraduate admissions -- Prospective students can apply online. They can also monitor the progress of their applications and be alerted to missing information, including test scores or letters of recommendation.
The university-wide Rutgers directory, student address updates and even post office box combinations also are available online. A comprehensive list of all Web applications for students developed by ACS can be found at www-acs.rutgers.edu/Apps/studweb.htm.
All sites containing personal information are secure and password protected, Gordon emphasized.
