President Francis L. Lawrence discussed careers in science with a class of ninth- and 10th-grade science and biology students at Arts High School in Newark Oct. 20 in observance of Teach For America Week 2000.
Lawrence joined 11 other notable New Jerseyans, including Gov. Christie Whitman; Willis Reed, senior vice president of the New Jersey Nets; and Lawrence Goldman, CEO, New Jersey Performing Arts Center, in the observance, which included several New Jersey schools. Lawrence was a guest teacher in the classroom of Shameek Robinson, a Rutgers graduate and a member of Teach For America, which recruits outstanding and diverse recent college graduates to commit two years to teach in under-resourced urban and rural public schools.
The goal of Teach For America Week is to demonstrate that all citizens — from corporate executives to government officials to college students — have a collective responsibility to ensure that all children have the opportunity to attain an excellent education.
