Tuckman named dean of Faculty of Management

Archived article from Oct 23, 1998

By Helen Paxton

Newark Provost Norman Samuels has announced that Howard Tuckman will assume the position of dean for the Faculty of Management in January 1999. Tuckman is currently dean of the School of Business at Virginia Commonwealth University.

Samuels said he and President Francis L. Lawrence were very pleased about Tuckman's appointment and added that Tuckman would be a great leader for the school and an excellent connection between Rutgers and the business community.

As dean of the Faculty of Management on the New Brunswick and Newark campuses, Tuckman will direct all operations of the school, which currently enrolls 1,500 undergraduate business students, 1,600 M.B.A. and Executive M.B.A. students, and 130 doctoral students.

Tuckman replaces George Benson, who left the university in June to become dean of the Terry College of Business at the University of Georgia.

Tuckman has been dean at Virginia Commonwealth University since 1993 and prior to that was interim dean and distinguished professor of economics at the University of Memphis. He has also worked in the Office of the Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare, the Office of Management and Budget and at Florida State University.

Tuckman holds a bachelor's degree from the Cornell University School of Industrial and Labor Relations and master's and doctoral degrees in economics from the University of Wisconsin.

At Virginia Commonwealth University, Tuckman raised the profile of the school both academically and within the business community, with particular emphasis on establishing strong collaborative arrangements with business leaders of top companies. He increased funding for all programs, pioneered a successful modular Executive M.B.A. program, planned and implemented major innovations in school technology, launched an executive education program, and established innovative marketing programs to enhance the image of the university's business school.

Tuckman, an expert in medical economics and strategic planning, has been the recipient of many awards and honors, including Leadership Metro Richmond, the University of Memphis Distinguished Research Award and the University of Memphis Distinguished Teaching Award. He is the author of eight books and more than 100 journal articles.
