Two alumni honored at Chatsworth center

Philip E. Marucci and Edward V. Lipman, two pre-eminent scientists and Rutgers graduates, were honored posthumously

Oct. 15 during a dedication ceremony at the Rutgers Blueberry and Cranberry Research and Extension Center in Chatsworth, N.J.

The center was renamed in Marucci's honor, and a new addition to the main laboratory building was named for Lipman. Both men were 1930s graduates of the Rutgers College of Agriculture, now Cook College.

The addition, a gift from the grower community, includes a main meeting room, a library, new office space, two large incubator rooms, a kitchen and new restrooms.

President Francis L. Lawrence and Bruce C. Carlton, executive dean of Cook College and executive director of the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station, along with members of the Marucci and Lipman families and the grower community, attended the dedication ceremony.

"The Rutgers Blueberry and Cranberry Research Center has a long and distinguished history in New Jersey … providing the kind of research that is part of a larger legacy that took shape under the leadership of two outstanding exponents of New Jersey agriculture, Philip Marucci and Ed Lipman," said Lawrence. "We have gathered today to acknowledge their lifelong contributions to research, to the blueberry and cranberry industries, and, of course, to Rutgers."

"This project that we dedicate today is the finest example of the power of partnership between the university and the industry," said Carlton in thanking the growers for their support. "It is what makes us here in New Jersey a leader in the field of blueberry and cranberry production -- a position we intend to maintain and strengthen in the future."

The late Philip E. Marucci was a world-renowned authority on blueberry and cranberry cultivation. He served as chief scientist of the Rutgers Blueberry and Cranberry Center for more than 30 years and made important contributions in entomology and blueberry and cranberry culture. His work led to standard management practices that are still employed today.

The late Edward V. Lipman is remembered for his tireless work at Ocean Spray. Author of "Labor of Love: My Life's Work with Cranberries and Ocean Spray," he served as president of the New Jersey Agriculture Society.

The center, established in 1962, generates and disseminates research information directly related to the production of high-quality blueberries and cranberries. Last year, the center received international acclaim for its research on cranberry compounds and urinary-tract health.
