Union election update
Employees choose no representation

In the spring vote on union representation, administrative employees at Rutgers chose not to be represented by a union. Since then the New Jersey Education Association (NJEA) has withdrawn petitions to represent both professional employees and primary-level supervisory employees.
The Public Employment Relations Commissions (PERC) announced July 11 that the majority of nonsupervisory administrative employees at Rutgers had chosen during the April 10 runoff election not to be represented by the NJEA. The vote was 311 to 304, with 11 challenged ballots. In its final decision, PERC declared five of the challenged ballots void; the remaining six were insufficient to affect the outcome.
Just as the results were being announced by PERC, the NJEA re-filed a petition to represent primary-level supervisors. However, this petition was withdrawn Aug. 8. Similarly, an NJEA petition to represent professional employees was filed Aug. 10 and withdrawn Sept. 11. In both cases, it appears that the NJEA lacked the 30 percent support needed to hold an election.
