The Whitaker Foundation has committed $5 million to the biomedical engineering department to enhance programs and facilities. The award was announced during the Sept. 4 groundbreaking for the biomedical engineering building.
The award includes $2 million in programmatic grants and a $3 million challenge grant that would support enhancements to the building so it could house the entire biomedical engineering department. The Whitaker Foundation is the premier provider of competitive grants for biomedical engineering programs at academic institutions in the United States and Canada.
"By helping us purchase equipment, provide fellowship support for students, hire new faculty and optimize construction as this new building rises, the Whitaker Foundation is further enhancing Rutgers' capabilities as a world-class center for biomedical engineering," said President Francis L. Lawrence.
Joseph J. Seneca, university vice president for academic affairs, said receiving the Whitaker funding is a great honor that "affirms the quality of faculty, research programs and students in this key area of engineering. These funds will help us continue to attract the best and brightest minds in the life sciences and engineering to New Jersey and Rutgers."
The grants are among the latest donations to The Rutgers Campaign: Creating the Future Today.
