A newly revitalized Walt Whitman program in American studies has returned to give Camden undergraduates a vibrant look at diverse aspects of American culture.
The program is an interdisciplinary minor that combines course work in American studies with classes in relevant disciplines -- literature, history, arts and culture, and the social or behavioral sciences. According to Tyler Hoffman, an assistant professor of English and co-director of the program, this gives students "the opportunity to examine the American experience from a variety of perspectives."
In addition to their courses, students are expected to complete an independent research project or an internship at a local museum, library or historical site. A specific Whitman option encourages participants in the minor to center their interdisciplinary studies around the poet, whose work, Hoffman says, "is a rich repository of literary, artistic, musical, historical and religious currents."
The program is also co-directed by Carol Singley, an associate professor of English, and G. Alan Tarr, a professor of political science.
