Rutgers University in Your Community
Girl Scout Program Award
Have you considered what your future career will be? The activities in this section will help you to learn some of the ways a Rutgers education has prepared many people for success.
Points of Pride
Rutgers has a lot to take pride in. We have talented faculty, staff, students, and alumni who are positive forces in the community, the state, and the world. Their dedication and commitment to teaching, research, and public service have helped to make Rutgers one of the nation’s leading public research universities.
Suggested Activity:
On the Rutgers University – Notable Alumni page, select one person from the list:
http://www.alumni.rutgers.edu/s/896/index.aspx?sid=896&gid=1&pgid=2184.
- Research information about that person's career path, beginning with what he or she studied at Rutgers.
- Think about how college courses and experiences helped prepare that person for his or her career. Share and discuss with your troop.
Your Future Career
A Rutgers education can prepare students for many different careers, but the university also helps them tackle career hunting through the Career Services office. There, students get support in preparing résumés, practicing for interviews, and finding job opportunities.
Suggested Activity:
Look through the majors and careers listed on this webpage:
http://careerservices.rutgers.edu/CareerHandouts.shtml
- Select a career that you’re interested in, then search for it in newspapers or job search websites. See how many job openings you can find in your field of interest.
- Practice writing a one-page letter to an employer explaining the reasons you are interested in a job opening at that company.
- Practice interview skills by role-playing in a mock job interview.
- Create or update your own résumé.
Women in Science, Engineering, and Mathematics
Rutgers has a special office and website dedicated to women who work in the fields of science, engineering, and mathematics. On the website, read women’s personal stories that explain what influenced them to pursue their careers:
http://sciencewomen.rutgers.edu
Suggested Activity:
On the Women in Science, Engineering, and Mathematics website, find the "Our Stories" page:
http://sciencewomen.rutgers.edu/profiles/?q=browse&b=stories. Read the stories of at least five scientists. You will see they were all curious about the world around them from the time they were young girls.
- Create a display about these women and work with your troop leader to obtain permission to have it shown at your local library or another organization.
- Tell your troop about one of the women and why you found her so interesting. Include information about your own interests in science or mathematics.
