In Memoriam

Stephen Bachelder, Retired Faculty, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, died on July 27, 2007. Union County Agricultural Agent II Bachelder was a member of the Rutgers Cooperative Extension, Cook College, Depar.

Viewing will be held Friday, August 3, 2007, 2 -4 PM, and 7-9 PM, at Piscataway Funeral Home, 18 Stelton Road, Piscataway, NJ, (732) 968-2828. Funeral will be 10 AM, Saturday August 4, 2007 at Kirkpatrick Chapel, Old Queens Campus, Rutgers in New Brunswick, NJ.

Stephen Bachelder, 80, passed away Friday July 27, 2007. Born in Bennginton, Vermont, he resided in Piscataway for the last 55 years.

He was a County Agricultural Agent with Rutgers Cooperative Extension for 27 years, was an Associate Professor with Rutgers University, and after
retirement he worked as a real estate agent. He was awarded Professor
Emeritus of Rutgers University in 1991.

Mr. Bachelder received a Bachelors of Science degree in plant research and
then a Masters of Science degree in plant pathology from Rutgers University.
He served as a sergeant during WWII, serving in Japan and the Philippines, where he served in the Medic Bush Masters 158th Regimental Combat Team and received the Philippines Liberation Medal. Mr. Bachelder was the past president and director of the NJ Federation of Shade Tree Commission, past president of the NJ County Agricultural Agents Association and lifetime member of the National Association, honorary member of the Arborist Association of NJ, the International Society of Arboriculture, the NJ Association of Realtors, Rutgers Scarlet R Club, Rutgers Cagers Club, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, a charter member of the WWII Memorial Association, past president of the University Swimming Association Inc, founder and past president of the
Piscataway Shade Tree Commission and member of the National Committee to
preserve Social Security and Medicad.

Mr. Bachelder was predeceased by his wife of 47 years, Mrs. Helen
Jean Bachelder, and by his brother John T. Bachelder. Surviving are his
daughters, Jeanne H. Ritchie and her husband Dan of Macungie, PA, Evelyn
Anne Bachelder of Easton, PA, Marjorie E. Golankiewicz and her husband Kevin
of Sandy Hook, CT and Diane E. Bachelder of Edison, NJ; his grandchildren; and his siblings, Gertrude Douglas, Margaret Rose, Elinor Enz and George Bachelder.
