Margery Somers Foster, Retired Staff, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, died on September 22, 2007. She was the Fifth Dean of Douglass College.
A memorial service in remembrance of Dean Foster will be held at Douglass College, in Voorhees Chapel, New Brunswick, NJ, on Monday, November 12, 2007, at 2:00 p.m.
Margery Somers Foster served as Dean of Douglass College from 1967 to 1975. Dean Foster promoted the value of Douglass Under her leadership during the early 1970s, Douglass College introduced the women's studies program. She also began building a large library collection of material relating to women's roles and accomplishments,and actively promoted expanding the career aspirations of Douglass students.
The Margery Somers Foster Center was created at the Mabel Smith Douglass
Library to honor her. A collaboration between Douglass College and the
Rutgers University Libraries, the Foster Center provides those working
in the fields of women's and gender studies a scholarly resource center
dedicated to acquiring, creating, preserving and promoting world-class
research and scholarship. The center creates and maintains virtual
archival collections in areas such as women's leadership and art.
Dean Foster's philosophy is acknowledged each year with the Margery
Somers Foster Senior Service Award. The Associate Alumnae of Douglass College
presents the award at the Sacred Path Ceremony to an outstanding senior
who has made an outstanding contribution to the College.
A second prize, the Margery Somers Foster Prize in Economics, was established anonymously in 2004. The prize honors Dean Foster, an economist whose early interests were public finance, economic development and economic history, and is awarded to an outstanding Douglass College senior majoring in economics.
