Jan S. Handleman, Active Faculty, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, died on April 03, 2008. Professor Handleman was Director of the Douglass Developmental Disabilities Center.
Dr. Handleman was a graduate of Rutgers University where he earned his B.A., M.A., and Ed.D. He was a professor of psychology in addition to being the director of the Douglass Developmental Disabilities Center at Rutgers, where he provided services to people with Autism and their families. For 11 years he served as president of the Board of Education of Solomon Schechter School of East Brunswick.
He was born in Newark, and had lived in South Brunswick and Highland Park for many years before moving to Somerset two and a half years ago.
He is survived by his wife, Elaine (Heyman) Handleman; a daughter, Lauren Rochelle; a sister, Nadine Byczkowski of North Brunswick; a brother, Frederick Handleman of St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands; and his father-in-law, Rudi Heyman.
