In Memoriam

Dr. Barbara Stern, Active Faculty, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, died on January 15, 2009. Professor Stern was a member of the Rutgers Business School.

A Memorial Service was held Saturday, January 31, 2009 at 5:00 pm at the New York Society Library, 53 East 79th Street (at Madison Avenue)

Barbara was a 1959 graduate of Cornell University. In 1961, she earned her M.A. in English at Hunter College, and in 1965 she earned her Ph.D. at the City University of New York. In 1981, she earned her M.B.A. in Marketing from Fordham University.

Barbara joined Rutgers University in 1986. She was chair of the Marketing Department at Rutgers Business School from 1998-2005 and Vice-Chair of the Marketing Department from 2006-2008. She conducted research in a broad range of areas of marketing, including consumer choice, gender and consumer behavior, literary theory and advertising, and intellectual property rights. Barbara also published more than 160 refereed journal articles, books, edited books, book chapters, conference proceedings, and reviews.

Barbara was founder and co-editor-in-chief of Marketing Theory, co- editor of the Routledge Press Interpretive Marketing Research Series, and co-editor of the Handbook of Marketing Theory, and an active reviewer for major journals in marketing. For her outstanding work and detailed reviews, she received numerous "Best Reviewer" awards. She also served on the editorial boards of numerous journals and as an editor of special issues and a frequent session chair and committee officer at professional conferences. In 1997, Barbara received the American Academy of Advertising's "Outstanding Contribution to Research" award. In 2006, she received a Newark Provost's Diversity Grant to develop a new course co-sponsored by Rutgers Business School and Newark Honors College: Diverse Consumers: Ethnicity, Religion, Social Class, and Gender. Barbara was also member of the Women's Studies Council on the Newark Campus of Rutgers University.
